Do you enjoy nature and words? Have you considered trying your own hand at nature writing? Join Deep River nature writer Katherine Hauswirth as she shares some slides of her nature writing adventures and reads briefly from The Book of Noticing (copies available for purchase/signing). This presentation will be followed by an overview of types of approaches to nature writing, then participant time outside to observe nature, trying to capture the experience in words. Bring your lunch if you’d like. The session will end with the group reconvening to compare notes and share work (sharing is optional). Participants are welcome to attend either the first half (reading/presentation) or the second half (learning about/experimenting with nature writing) alone.

Music on the Lawn with Samantha Goodman — Wednesday July 25, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.

Bring your chairs and picnic dinner to enjoy some music on our lawn. If the weather is inclement or too hot, we will hold the concert indoors.

Samantha Goodman is a singer-songwriter native to Connecticut. Growing up in West Hartford, CT, she starred in several musical theater projects at Conard High School and studied voice at the HARTT School of Music. Her next adventure took her to Boston University as an opera major, where she promptly fell in love with her new guitar and gave up opera for folk and country music. Years later, Samantha returned to Connecticut and began singing in vocal competitions, including becoming the 2007 New England Regional Female Vocalist of the Year for Talent Quest and competing nationally in Las Vegas, NV.  Upon her return, she decided to turn her attention to live music and began fronting local bands, including her most successful project, Bad Penny, which will have some return engagements this summer.  Samantha has mastered many genres throughout her career, and seeks to move her audience through music, no matter what the occasion.  She is equally at ease singing standards, show tunes, arias, folk music, country, pop, rock, jazz, and blues. In particular, her training with nationally-recognized vocalist Christine Ohlman helped her develop her signature soulful sound. Her original works reflect her eclectic taste, ranging from rockabilly to punked-pop to blues ballads.
