Edible Wild Plants of the Northeast
Come join us for our fourth lecture in our series, River Views: an appreciation of our state’s namesake waterway.

“Edible Wild Plants of the Northeast” is a presentation that will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. by John Root, a Certified Organic Landscape Professional, offering a comprehensive introduction to the identification and uses of wild plants for food and beverage. Distinguishing characteristics, seasons of availability, habitats, methods of preparation, and nutritional and medicinal value of our region’s most common and appealing wild plants are discussed. Questions and comments are welcome throughout the presentation, and illustrated pamphlets with plant descriptions, guidelines for responsible and safe foraging, and a bibliography for further study are distributed as well.  John will also have plants for sale.


Preschool Storytime

Join us for themed stories, songs, finger plays, and crafts.   Preschool Storytime takes place every Wednesday at 10:30 am.  In June, those dates are 6, 13, 20, and 27.  Appropriate for children ages 3 and up, but younger siblings are always welcomed.

Saturday Storytime

Can’t make preschool storytime during the week?  Join us on the first Saturday of every month at 10:30 a.m. for stories, songs, finger plays, and crafts.   In June, that date is the 2nd.  Appropriate for children ages 3 and up, but younger siblings are always welcomed.

Music with Margie

Music with Margie is a multi-sensory music program that builds skills in order for children to reach the developmental goals they need to enter kindergarten.  Margie brings items for children to play with such as beanbags, scarves, puppets, and instruments.  Music with Margie will meet on Thursday, June 7, 2018 at 10:30 am.  The theme for June is “Bugs and Insects”.   Appropriate for children ages 2 to 6.

Toddler Tunes

Toddler Tunes is a music and movement program for toddlers and their caregivers.  Join us to sing nursery rhymes, dance, make music, and read a simple story.  In June, Toddler Tunes will take place on the following Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.: 14, 21, and 28.  Appropriate for children ages 1 to 3, but younger and older siblings are always welcomed.

LEGO™ Club

Like playing with Legos?  Come build with us!  Each month will feature one unique theme and one free build.  Lego creations will be put on display until the next session.   Lego Group meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.  In June, those dates are 5 and 19.  Appropriate for children ages 5 and up.

2018 “Libraries Rock” Summer Reading Program

Celebrate the kickoff to our Summer Reading Program with an interactive performance by Sunny Train.  ​Performing a happy blend of original and traditional music, Sunny Train connects the community through song, yoga, and hands on instruments for everyone to join the fun!  Shake eggs, bang on drums, twirl hula hoops, explore yoga poses or play with the world’s biggest bubbles; Sunny Train is sure to delight!  Wednesday, June 27th, on the Library lawn (weather permitting). This is event is free and is appropriate for children of all ages.

Paws to Read

Bring your favorite book to the library, and spend some time reading to a certified therapy dog.  Dogs are great listeners!  Paws to Read takes place on the third Saturday of every month from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  In June, that date is the June 16.  Paws to Read is appropriate for children and teens in Pre-K through 12th grade.  Registration is required as space is limited.  Call 860-345-2204 and ask for the Children’s Department to receive your 15-minute time slot.

Brainerd’s 3rd Annual Agricultural Day

Join us to celebrate the growing season and raise awareness of the crucial role that agriculture plays in our society on Brainerd’s 3rd Annual Agricultural Day, June 9, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  Throughout the grounds of the library, meet a range of farm animals, play in our giant bounce house with slide, make themed crafts, enjoy food, and be sure to check out our new Story Walk, courtesy of Haddam Eagle Scout Andrew Santopietro.  This is event is free and is appropriate for children of all ages.


Cupcake Lab

No competition, just fun!  Complete the challenge of the month and hone your skills for the Cupcake Championships!  We provide the cupcakes and decorating supplies, and you decorate them to create unique cupcakes.  Each month has a new science based theme!  This month’s theme is Volcanology (the study of volcanoes)!   Cupcake Lab will take place on Thursday, June 7, 2018 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.  For tweens and teens grades 6 through 12.

Teen Advisory Board

The TAB will be on break for the summer but will return in September.  Stay tuned for information on our next meeting.

Summer Crafts for Teens

The teen space will have various crafts throughout the summer following the summer reading theme: Libraries Rock!  Check Facebook & Instagram for our latest craft.  In the meantime, check out our graffiti art wall and leave your mark!
