Burr Elementary School Chosen as CAS “Elementary School of the Year”

Press Release from RSD #17.

Burr Elementary School

Burr District Elementary in Higganum, CT has been named The Connecticut Association of Schools’ Elementary School of the Year for school year 2018-2019.  BES is one of the elementary schools in Regional School District #17, Haddam/Killingworth.

The Connecticut Association of Schools bases this award on excellence in seven categories: instruction, curriculum, collaboration, culture and climate, professional learning culture, communication, and assessment. The award is given “to give public recognition in Connecticut and nationally to an outstanding CAS member elementary school that represents the best in the profession.”

CAS writes of BES: “This recognition is a direct result of the efforts of the principal and staff as they plan for the children who attend Burr.”  They noted that the time set aside for intervention and small group learning and our maker space were great examples of personalized learning for the students.  After interviewing parents and staff, they found a culture of shared leadership, school-wide collaboration, and strong pedagogical knowledge.

When told of the recognition, Principal Eric Larson shared that he felt this great honor is reflective of the incredible staff and the supporting families that are within the Burr community.

Added 5/4/18: The Connecticut Association of Schools will present the staff and faculty this award at the May 15 meeting of the Regional School District 17 Board of Education, held at 7:00 p.m. at Burr District Elementary School.
