Activity Highlights

The holiday season is upon us and we have lots of festive activities to offer Haddam Seniors this month.

Club 60 will be kicking off the season with their Holiday Party on Monday, December 4, 2017 at 11:30 a.m.  As this celebration will be taking place at St. Peter’s Hall, we will be closing the Center early to encourage maximum participation.

We’re bringing back “L-C-R” on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, 1:00 p.m.  “L-C-R” is a fun dice game for folks of all ages, based strictly on luck and easy to learn.  And of course we’ll be putting our own holiday twist on it!

“Christmas with the Kranks” will be featured on Friday, Dec. 8, 2017 at 10:00 a.m.  Pull up a seat and we’ll make the popcorn!

Join us for a Holiday Song Sing-Along led by our talented Ukuladies, Monday, December 11, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.   Following, we will be enjoying a special holiday lunch, prepared and donated by The Riverhouse at Goodspeed Station.   You must sign up no later than 12/7/17.

One of our local Girl Scout troops (3rd graders) will be bringing some holiday cheer to the Center on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.  Join us for refreshments and a special holiday BINGO.

On Friday, December 15, 2017 it’s “National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day.”  We invite you to wear your ugliest, gaudiest, holiday attire.  Then join us for BINGO, starting at 1:00 p.m, for your chance to win some extra holiday cash.  An additional prize will be awarded for “The Ugliest Christmas Sweater.”

There’s nothing like enjoying a little baking during the holidays.  On Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. we’ll be cooking up some Christmas cookies.  Sign up at the Center please.

AARP has been invited to present The Con-Artist Playbook:  A Look Inside the Mind of a Criminal.

Join us for a look inside the mind of a criminal to understand the psychology behind ID Theft, Fraud & other scams affecting your family and community.  This program, scheduled for Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 12:30 p.m., is open to the public.  Register by calling 860-345-2480.

Don’t forget about our regularly scheduled programming, including Bingo, Tai Chi, Needlework Club, etc.   We encourage you to check in at the Senior Center regularly for any updates and changes in programming, as well as to sign up for special events.

A Note from the Kitchen Café

We’d like to welcome Suzanne Condie who is joining the Community Renewal Team (CRT) as Café Coordinator for the Haddam Senior Center.  Suzanne has been a resident of Higganum for the past 5 years and previously resided in nearby Killingworth for over 30 years.  Her husband of over 25 years, Jon Condie, is a local musician and has entertained at the Senior Center himself.  Suzanne is looking forward to serving the seniors and community, as well as meeting more of Haddam’s warm and friendly citizens.  Welcome Suzanne!

There are a couple of additional changes taking place in the congregate café that we’d like to share.  First of all, in regards to lunch registration, you may continue to sign up at the Center or you may call your request in no later than noon the day before; however, any request made via telephone should be called in to the Center’s main phone line (860-345-2480).  Thank you!  After the new year CRT will be rolling out a new electronic registration process — more details to follow.

Also, if you’ve been at lunch recently on one of our quieter service days, you may have noticed that lunch was served in a pre-portioned lunch tray.  These trays are designed for smaller lunch crowds, where attendance is below 9 people.  In addition to providing consistent portions every time, these meals also reduce food waste at the Center.  It is important to note that these meal trays, or unitized meals, offer you the same meal as on the calendar; the only difference is that it’s just not being served on a plate.

We hope you enjoy the December menu.  As always, we want to know what you think, so please feel free to give us feedback from time to time.

We wish you all a Happy Holiday and a safe and healthy New Year!

Many Reasons to be Thankful

Haddam Seniors and friends within the local community have given the Center many reasons to be thankful this season.

We’d like to first give thanks to Shirley Talbot, Paula Woodworth, and Alice Zanelli for organizing the Holiday Craft Fair at the Center.   Because of the efforts of these fine women, November 12th’s fair was a big success, raising a total of $1,257.00 for Haddam’s Senior Nutrition Fund.   It would be remiss if we didn’t mention that these ladies had a little (ok, a lot of!) help, so thank you (in no particular order) to Joyce Genovesio, Mary Nork, Jackie Crysler, Claudette Sirois, Marge DeBold, Bette Dybick, Mike Zanelli, Jim Woodworth, Barbara Bondi, Wendy Moyers, Mary Kidd, Sue Rutty, Nancy Woods, Lizz Milardo, Leo Sirois, Marie Forysth, Shannon Buganski, Citizen’s Bank, Dunkin’ Donuts, River Valley Provisions, and Higganum Village Market.  We would also like to thank everyone that donated items to the Senior craft table and to the bake sale, as well as those who attended the fair in support of the Haddam Senior Center.  Thank you!

Shirley Talbot, Alice Zanelli, and Paula Woodworth  present Senior Center Director Shannon Buganski with a check in the amount of $1,257 for the Senior Nutrition Fund

A big shout of thanks goes out to one of the Center’s most generous givers, who prefers to remain anonymous, along with Dmitri D’Alessandro of Middletown Framing, 502 Main Street, Middletown, CT 06457 (860-347-0064) for their contributions in the recent custom framing of Anthony (Tony) J. Bondi’s portrait.  Tony Bondi, First Selectman of Haddam (1999-2009), officially designated the old schoolhouse as Haddam’s Senior Center early in his five year term.  According to an article in the Middletown Press, published on December 21, 2001, Bondi stated “the seniors have always informally gathered at the old schoolhouse for lunch or to play cards” though until 2001 there was no official Senior Center in Haddam.   A suggestion was made by then-appointed Senior Center Manager, Fran Oktavec, and brought to the Board of Selectman for approval, to name the Center after Anthony J. Bondi.   Bondi’s portrait continues to adorn the main hall at the Center.

Another “thank you” goes out to Higganum resident Lynne Cooper.  Following a Club 60 meeting on Monday, November 6th, Lynne presented the Center with a painting of the Haddam Senior Center, which she won the night before at a silent auction event.  Thank you for this special gift!

It would not be proper if we didn’t extend our thanks to all of our supporters.  Each month the Center receives several donations, from plasticware to pastries, puzzles, and books.  The Center is a better place because of the generosity and thoughtfulness of our community.

If you’d like to find out how you can help the Haddam Senior Center, please give us a call (860-345-2480).  We’re always in need of a few things- store bought baked goods, plastic ware, paper dessert plates, copier paper, and your talents (if you have one you want to share with us!).
