Former HKHS Teacher In Running for Featured Podcast

By Kathy Brown.

Dawn Hoffman, who retired from Haddam Killingworth High School in 2013, after 30 years of teaching, has been writing books in her retirement. During her tenure at H-K, she taught Grades 9-11 English as well as Film and Creative Writing courses.  Ms. Hoffman says, “I always promised my Creative Writing students that someday I would write books. Now I have written two, with a third one in the works.” To work herself up to her goal of a novel, she started writing personal essays, and found she enjoyed it so much, that she continued to write them.

Saving Our Lives: Volume One–Essays to Inspire the Writer in YOU, her first collection of personal essays, is now in the running to be featured on one of Roxanne Coady’s “Just the Right Book” podcasts. There is a poll on Roxanne’s website and the book with the most votes will win. You can vote online (one vote per device) until December 15, 2017 at THIS LINK. The book is “a collection of essays meant to inspire readers to sit down and save their life stories as I am saving mine,” Ms. Hoffman told us.

Phil Devlin, another retired HKHS teacher wrote this about Ms. Hoffman’s book, “This is a wonderful, varied collection of essays by a perceptive observer of the world around her. The title has a clever double meaning and although the book can serve as a textbook to guide students in learning to write personal essays– it is teeming with useful writing prompts–it stands well on its own as an interesting, humorous book. Great piecemeal read.”

Please consider voting for one of H-K’s former teachers before Dec. 15.
