SMC: Swimming & Diving Squads Combine for Two Dual Victories in a Pair of Meets

(November 13, 2017) — The Saint Michael’s College men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams combined to go 2-2 over the weekend during a pair of meets. The women moved to 5-2 on the season after splitting a Friday tri-meet, downing Franklin Pierce University, 186-26, and falling to Merrimack College, 123-100, before defeating Clarkson University, 125-77, on Saturday. The men are 2-2 after losing a 130-90 decision against Clarkson on Saturday.

Junior Patty Kohn’s (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) three victories led the way on Friday, as she topped the 100- (57.09) and 200-yard (2:03.68) freestyle races while leading off for the top 200-yard medley quartet (1:57.36). Senior Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield), junior Tess Grimaldi (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) and sophomore Lauren Giampietro (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) swam the remaining legs. Murphy topped the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.01), while Giampietro was first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.51), with first-year Kristin Burlew (Springfield, Vt./Hartford) third. Giampietro also placed second during the 200-yard individual medley. Senior Genevieve Gigandet (Groveland, Mass./Central Catholic) claimed both one-meter diving competitions, first scoring 137.85 before netting 178.85. Burlew and Grimaldi joined senior Coral Santos (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) and sophomore Sarah White (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet Regional) to capture second place in the 200 free relay, while first-year Meg Geschwind (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) was third in both the 500 and 1,000 free races.

Giampietro and Kohn both won three races on Saturday, including siding on the 400 medley relay (4:19.31). Murphy and White also swam legs. Kohn topped the 50 (26.58) and 500 (5:34.31) free races, and Giampietro took the 100 breast (1:13.93) and 200 IM (2:23.71) events. Kohn edged out Grimaldi by just 0.33 seconds in the 50 free. Murphy added a win in the 100 fly (1:03.07) by 0.07 seconds, and Grimaldi topped the 100 free (1:00.40) field, with junior Elizabeth Doherty (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) taking second. Grimaldi and White sided with Santos and junior Meg Flanagan (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School/Boston College) to win the 200 free relay (1:49.56.). Gigandet took both one-meter diving events, with 161.05 and 123.32 points. Sophomore Reiley Adelson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) touched the wall first during the 1,000 free (12:25.39) for her first career individual victory, followed by classmate Megan Reid (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) in second. Adelson was second in the 500 free, Santos took the runner-up spot in the 200 free, and senior Sammy Sidorakis (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) placed second during the 100-yard backstroke.

Senior Spencer Ralston (Hebron, Conn./Cushing Academy) registered three wins to pace the men, including taking the 500 free (5:10.18) and 1,000 free (10:51.09) events. During the 200 free relay, he partnered with junior Seamus Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham), sophomore Connor Hopkins (Windham, N.H./Windham) and first-year Payton Stewart (Keene, N.H./Keene) for victory in 1:34.19, topping a Clarkson foursome by 0.10 seconds. Hopkins took the 50 free race (22.37) for his second win. Junior Pat Thornton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) was the runner-up during the 100 fly, 200 free and 500 free, as he trailed the winner during the 100 fly by 0.47 seconds and the top finisher during the 200 free by 0.54 ticks. Butler was part of a second-place 200 medley relay quartet, joining junior Jacob Sutton (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro), sophomore Aidan Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and first-year Dan Fortier (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich). Stewart was third in the 50 free, Fortier took third in the 100 fly, and Mulderrig placed third during the 200 IM.
