Local Dance Studio and Dance Companies collect $4500 in cash and supplies to Benefit Child Life

The Dance Corner, of Killingworth, CT, presented a dance concert and community day of dance October 14 and 15, 2017 to benefit Child Life at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, and to promote professional Connecticut based dance companies in their community.

The “Dancing From the Heart” concert featured dance performances from Connecticut dance companies including, Sonia Plumb Dance, Vivid Ballet, Ballroom Dancin’ Fools, River Valley Dance Project and Moxie Dance. Students from The Dance Corner Company also performed. All proceeds from the concert, $2100, were donated to the Child Life Department at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital.

Child Life at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital helps children cope with the adjustments of being in a hospital by providing a variety of play experiences. These activities help both children and families gain a greater understanding of medical procedures, which helps reduce stress and fear of the unknown. Money raised by this concert will directly benefit pediatric patients at Yale.

In addition to the performance, The Dance Corner held a Child Life Wish List supply drive at their studio in conjunction with a Community Day of Dance on October 15th . Artists from the Dancing From the Heart concert taught master classes in ballet, modern dance and ballroom dance to local students. All of the artists donated their teaching fees, a total of $400 to Child Life. In addition, over 300 “Wish List” supplies were collected for Child Life including craft supplies, gift cards, self care items and toys. In total $2500 in cash and an estimated $2000 in supply and gift card donations were raised to benefit Child Life at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital.

Casey Charpentier, MS, CCLS, Certified Child Life Specialist at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital said, ” Both the items (which were all items our program needs and will put to good use!) and the monetary donation were so generous and will greatly benefit our child life program and of course the children and families at our hospital.”

Carrie Smith, director of The Dance Corner said, ” It has been a long time dream of mine to bring professional and student dancers from our community together for a performance to benefit those in need.¬† Part of our mission at The Dance Corner is to promote dance in our community and to give back. The Dancing from the Heart weekend successfully did both. We plan to make this an annual event.”

The Dance Corner staff and students are currently preparing for their second charitable concert of the season. The Winter Follies will be presented at the Clinton Town Hall auditorium on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. Admission is $10 or donation of a new unwrapped toy for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. Last year, over 250 toys were collected for children in need. Tickets are available at the door.

The Dance Corner is committed to providing its students with a positive learning environment to enjoy the art of dance. The Dance Corner has been providing students from Killingworth, Madison, Clinton, Deep River, Chester, Essex, Ivoryton, Centerbrook, Haddam, Higganum, Westbrook, Guilford and East Haddam with quality dance training for over 20 years.
