SMC: Cross Country Squads Among Top 15 at James Early Inviational

Cross Country Squads Both Among Top 15 at James Earley Invitational

The Saint Michael’s College men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in their first of two straight races at Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass., on Saturday, October 7, 2017, finishing 14th and 12th, respectively, during the James Earley Invitational.

The Purple Knight women were just outside the top 10 in a 41-school field that included NCAA Division II and III teams among its complete squads, as they netted 334 points to match 11th-place The College of Saint Rose and finish just one behind 10th-place Saint Anselm College (333). Sophomore Abby French (Nashua, N.H./Academy of Notre Dame) led the women during the 5K by placing 17th among 257 finishers in a time of 19:27.42, while senior Roxy Withers (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) was 54th in 20:12.83. Sophomore Emma Koukos (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) took 84th in 20:41.93, edging out senior Leah Seften (Bolton, Conn./Bolton), who placed 89th at 20:46.09. Junior Emily Calder (Hopkinton, N.H./Hopkinton) captured 104th place at 20:55.91 to round out her team’s scorers. Koukos set a personal record for the third straight race, French and Seften reached PRs for their second consecutive meet, and Withers shattered her personal best by more than 34 seconds.

On the men’s side, the Purple Knights scored 427 points to claim 14th out of 40 schools while besting Northeast-10 Conference foes Saint Anselm (521) and Saint Rose (650) along the way. Sophomore Kevin Jeter (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) took 19th among 266 finishers in the 8K by crossing the line in 27:01.85, while classmate Tim DeCosta (Barnstable, Mass./Barnstable) nabbed 82nd at 28:52.81. First-year Mike DeAngelo (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central) was 104th in 29:21.88, and junior David Baird (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) narrowly trailed in 107th at 29:26.58. Classmate Nathan Terry (Reading, Mass./Tilton School) took 124th at 29:49.03, setting a PR for the third straight race. DeAngelo and DeCosta also registered PRs.
