Boys Soccer 2017: HKHS vs. Old Saybrook

Haddam-Killingworth Boys Soccer Narrowly Falls to Old Saybrook and Ties Morgan

Written by Graham Mirmina.

Haddam-Killingworth High School Boys Soccer had a strong start to its season with three consecutive victories early on in the year, and on Sept. 25, 2017 they looked to continue riding that wave of momentum against Old Saybook. They ultimately lost a hard-fought battle to the Rams, 1-0.

Despite playing hard throughout the first half and coming close to scoring a goal, both teams entered the second half on a stalemate. It wasn’t until roughly the 22:00 minute mark in the second half that Old Saybook clinched a goal, maintaining that lead for the remainder of the game.

While it was a solid effort all around from the Cougars, Spooner especially performed well as goalkeeper, keeping Old Saybrook at bay for a majority of the game before allowing a sole goal to slip through.

The senior-stacked team consisting of Spooner, Ben McLaughlin, Gabriel Mangiafico, Isiah Smith, Kyle Crandall and Matt Savastra, among others, is ready to rebound and their leadership should play a significant role in the level of success they amount to in the second half of the season.

They looked to bounce back in their subsequent game with Morgan, a rival team of theirs, on Sept. 27, 2017 only to tie the Huskies 1-1 after a highly physical game.

Going forward, the Cougars will aim to pick up their first victory since beating Hale Ray when they do battle with Westbrook, East Hampton and Old Lyme in the coming weeks.
