Brainerd Memorial Library: Solar Eclipse Viewing 8/21/17

Written by Jason Bogdan.

On August 21st, 2017, during the solar eclipse which spread throughout the country, Haddam’s Brainerd Memorial Library was one of the many places which celebrated the rare event in Connecticut.

Organized by librarians Melissa Lehmacher and Laurie Gardner, over 200 people from nearby towns came together in the outside area with provided seating to view the moon slightly envelop the sun. Special eclipse glasses were provided by the Space Science Institute, and the library held activities for the children including making art “sun prints.”

Lehmacher was very proud about the turnout, mentioning how glad she was about the people who participated. “It’s so nice, even though we ran out of the glasses, everyone is willing to share theirs.”

“It was great that the library hosted this,” says Heather Delaurentis, one of the parents who attended. “It brings the community together and is educational for the kids.”
