Trooper and K-9 attacked

At approximately 3:30 pm, State Police Troop F dispatch received a report of a disturbance between neighbors in front of 20 Shore Drive, Higganum. Trooper Derek Smitt and his K-9 partner Brutus arrived on scene and found Zachary Dortche , 23, of 20 Shore Drive, behaving erratically and yelling threatening remarks. Dortche allegedly approached Trooper Smitt in an aggressive manner and then physically attacked the Trooper. The state police K-9 then engaged Dortche as he was physically assaulting Trooper Smitt. As the K-9 was engaging Dortch , he punched the K-9. Dortche was subsequently placed into custody. Dortche was treated at Middlesex Shoreline clinic for K-9 bite injuries and for an emergency evaluation. Trooper Smitt sustained a minor injury and was treated released. His K-9 partner did not sustain any injury. Zachary Dortche, was charged with, Assault on a police officer, Interfering with an officer, Cruelty to animals, Breach of peace and Threatening. He was held on a $25,000 cash bond.
