At 9:20 on Saturday, June 10, 2017, Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responded to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 81 and Woods Road. A driver, headed south on Route 81, struck and slid onto a guard rail near Burr Cemetery. The vehicle slid sideways across Route 81, spun backwards, struck the curb, and ultimately flipped onto the passenger’s side near the north-bound side of the road. The driver self-extricated and was taken to Hartford Hospital via Haddam Volunteer Ambulance Service. HVFC cleaned a fluid leak and closed one lane of Route 81 during the incident. Both lanes were closed while crews worked to clear the scene. The accident is under investigation by Connecticut State Police.

Earlier in the day, shortly after 3 p.m., HVFC responded to a motor vehicle accident on Candlewood Hill Road near the intersection of Little City Road and Higganum Road. A driver lost control of her vehicle and struck a utility pole, causing downed wires to touch the vehicle. HVFC secured the vehicle while Eversource secured the wires and pole. The driver was evaluated on scene and refused additional medical treatment. The scene was turned over to the Connecticut State Police.
