On June 20, 2017, Ryan MacLeod, senior at Haddam Killingworth High School earned his Eagle Scout award during a special ceremony by Haddam Boy Scout Troop #44. Ryan is the son of Ken and Dawn MacLeod of Haddam, CT. Ryan has been in Scouting for 10 years, starting in 2006 as a tiger scout in Cub Scouts. To achieve this, Ryan had to earn 21 merit badges, including the following:

  • First aid
  • Citizenship in the Community
  • Citizenship in the World
  • Communication
  • Cooking
  • Personal Fitness
  • Emergency Preparedness or Lifesaving
  • Engironmental Science or Sustainability
  • Personal Management
  • Swimming or Hiking or Cycling
  • Camping
  • Family Life.
Eagle Scouts also have to undergo an Eagle Board of Review in which they present their completed leadership service project. Ryan’s service project was improving the garden at Burr Elementary School by creating wooden boarder, resurfacing the ground in the garden with 14 cubic yards of pea stone gravel, and building two benches. “The resurface was done because the school’s landscapers couldn’t mow the awkward area,” Ryan explained. “The benches were made so that people and classes could have a place to sit outside and enjoy the gardens.” Ryan started working on his project in September 2016, and finished with a work party on November 11, 2016.
“Ken and I are very proud of Ryan,” said his mother, Dawn. “He is a great kid. High honors every semester through high school and inducted into National Honor Society junior year, while taking AP and Honors classes. He ran on the Cross Country team, indoor track, and spring track all four years of high school. Plus participating in all of his Boy Scout endeavors.” Ryan has a younger sister Kelly, and grandparents Nan and Dan Molta, and Barb and Bruce MacLeod. Mrs. MacLeod continued, “We thank Troop 44 leaders Mike Parker, Dan Lamoureux, Mark Pach, and Dave Stock. These fine men have made a positive impact on Ryan through the years. Haddam Troop 44 has had a key role in Ryan’s life. He has made wonderful life-long friendships with his fellow scouts. We also thank Burr Elementary School’s principal Eric Larson and RSD 17’s Director of Buildings & Maintenance Mike DeStefano for allowing Ryan to enhance the garden area as his Eagle Scout project.
