Rebecca Degnan and the Shoreline Singers

 …
A few years ago, Rebecca Degnan was the popular Haddam-Killingworth Middle School choral director, after graduating from the Hartt School of Music. After several years Rebecca took time off to begin a family and then she returned to university to pursue a Master’s degree in School Counseling. Today, she is a school counselor at Haddam-Killingworth Middle School, plus she gives private and group singing lessons. On top of this busy schedule, Rebecca started a choral group, the SHORELINE SINGERS, which is open to singers from Grade 9 through Adult ages. Everyone is welcome to join the singing group. For the last several years, the group rehearses Wednesday nights from 6 to 7:15 pm at the Higganum Congregational Church, on Parsonage Road and Route 154 quite near the Higganum Center. Rebecca says the acoustics in the Higganum Church’s large social room are wonderful, and Brian Thayer and church staff have been most accommodating.

Though the group is open to all from grade 9 or older, Rebecca has several adult professionals in the choir. The choir fee has been $195 per semester, but Rebecca is considering lowering the fees beginning this fall. Taxes take about 45% of the fees paid, with other costs being rental of rehearsal space, purchase of music, etc. The group size has been from 15 to about 22 singers, with approximately 2/3 being adults. Rebecca has several mother-daughter duos in the choir. She would welcome more men. The choir gives one formal concert per semester, with the whole choir doing numbers, and additional solo or small group numbers as well. The repertoire ranges from traditional, classical and religious choral numbers to pop, Broadway, and gospel. In general, Rebecca accompanies the chorus on piano.

JASMINE GRISWOLD at River House Summer Cabaret

Occasionally, there is additional guitar and drums with the piano for the performances given at the River House in Haddam. This fine space gives room for a large audience, with pasta dinner, at the River House. For the past 6 years, Rebecca has produced a Summer Cabaret. This year’s will be on AUGUST 7th at 6PM at the RIVER HOUSE. The $10 entrance fee includes the pasta dinner, with a cash bar. The Summer Cabaret features soloists, including first-timers. In the winter, Rebecca has produced, for adult audiences, an “Evening of Inappropriate Song” featuring risqué numbers, many from Broadway musicals. Rebecca hopes the Shoreline Singers can get a “gig” singing the National Anthem before a Wolfpacks hockey or WNBA Suns Game.
