powderpuff-team-photo-2016On Sunday afternoon on the HKHS football field, November 27, 2016, the Haddam Killingworth High School Seniors defeated the Juniors in the first annual Powderpuff football game, sponsored by the HK Touchdown Club. There were games in the ’70s and ’80s, but this was the first one in a long time, and the girls were very excited to play. The final score was Seniors 20, Juniors 9.

“We had over 150 spectators,” said HK Touchdown Club President, Linda Ellex  “[We] collected around 100 food items for the local food banks. We look forward to this event growing each year. The girls had a GREAT time.”

In the first play of the game, senior Alissa Bonsall ran for a 75-yard touchdown; Cam Strober kicked for the extra point, giving the seniors an early lead of 7-0. A few minutes later, however, the juniors answered that goal with a 30-yard run for a touchdown by Kate Porter, and the extra point was kicked by Daijah Rich, for a tie score of 7-7. The score remained 7-7 until the last minute of the third quarter, when junior Kate Porter pulled a flag in the end zone for the safety to put the juniors ahead by a score of 9-7. With about four minutes left of the fourth quarter, senior Alissa Bonsall ran for a 50-yard touchdown with the extra point scored by Cam Strober, giving the seniors the lead 14-9. As the time was running out, senior Julia Kostek ran in a 10-yard touchdown, giving the win of the first annual Powderpuff Football Game to the seniors with a final score of 20-9.

The event was not affiliated with the high school, so the girls had to raise money for insurance, security, usage of the high school’s field and shirts. They held bake sales and charged $5 admission to the game to cover costs. According to Ellex, “Thanks to the determination of a group of senior girls lead by Nicole Bobbi and Alexi Nuhn, with the support of the HK Touchdown Club, the first annual powderpuff game came together. [They] raised a decent amount of money to be used as start up cost for the 2nd annual powderpuff game next year.”

The girls and the HK Touchdown Club would like to thank the sponsors: Middletown Police Union, Middletown PBA, Northside Self Storage, J Bobbi and Son LLC, and Avery Brother’s Inc. These local companies provided door prizes: Killingworth Family Pharmacy, Deb’s Restaurant, Da Vinci’s Pizza, and  Hunters Recreational Products.
