Official Haddam Town Budget Referendum Ballot

A copy of the official Haddam Town Budget Referendum Ballot can be viewed HERE.  This important vote is scheduled for WEDNESDAY June 1st, 2016 at all three polling places from 6 AM until 8 PM.  The ballot shows four questions, with as much description as space allows.  (Special memory cards had to be shipped, on loan to address more that 3 questions.)  NOTE: THIS IS A TWO SIDED BALLOT !!

There is a detailed discussion of the background behind these questions by a Board of Finance spokesperson HERE.  It is highly recommended that you “do your homework” before stepping into the voting booth.

Absentee ballots are available at the Town Clerk’s office and curbside voting will be available on June 1st.

Whatever your thoughts on the budget please come out and vote. This is when you can be heard on how your money is spent. There has been a lot of talk of whether or not a referendum is a good idea but what has to be remembered is that the basic procedure of approving a town budget has changed very little. There was a budget hearing in mid May to voice your opinion to the BOF on how the money was being spent and what needed more or less funding. The major change is instead of having a town meeting to vote on the recommended budget (where only a very small fraction of eligible voters attend) the referendum gives an opportunity for a greater cross section of voters to have their voices heard. I am not advocating for a vote one way or another, that is your personal preference on how you see town funding. I am advocating for you to come out and be part of the democratic process.
