The Mack brothers

February 26, 2016 — The National Geographic Bee notified over eighty participating institutions that their school champions had qualified for the next level of competition in this annual test of geographic knowledge. Jaden Mack, a seventh-grade student from Haddam-Killingworth Middle School, was one of those students who qualified for the State Bee, scheduled for April 1st at Central Connecticut State University. Mack faced a very difficult yet familiar set of challenges on his way to achieving this noteworthy success. First, Jaden competed against roughly 100 of his grade-level peers in the school qualifying round. Jaden was one of the top-two performers in seventh grade and he next faced off with six other grade level champions in the school bee finale on January 15th. Among the eight school finalists were Jaden’s two brothers, Colin (8th) and Riley (6th). After a series of incredibly difficult questions, the last three finalists to remain were Jaden and his brothers. The family affair ended with Jaden coming out on top after a tie-breaker round that just barely separated Jaden and Colin. After winning the school bee, Mack was then administered a grueling, 76 question online exam that served to narrow down the field of school champions in the state to 100. Jaden’s exemplary performance on this test proved to be enough to book his ticket to the state finals where, in a month’s time, he will continue his incredible journey.
