The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering Zumba this spring!  Session I will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from March 25 – May 11 (No 4/13, 4/15). The fee is $60 (2x a week) or $36 (1x a week). Non-residents can register for an additional $10.   Participants can try a class for $10.

Zumba is Latin inspired dance/fitness craze sweeping the world. Fusing hyonotic Latin and other international rhythms with easy-to-follow moves, Zumba is a one-of-a-kind dance fitness class designed to burn calories and get your energy pumping. There are no complicated moves to learn and you don’t need the coordination of a pro. Zumba is not only great for the body, but is also great for the mind.  It s a “feel happy” workout.  Stretching, abs and toning will also be added. Join the party!


The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a program for children ages 18 mos. – 4 years this spring. This program offers the opportunity to meet other parents and toddlers in a playgroup atmosphere. Your child will have fun getting messy. Experiment with different textural materials such as shaving cream, goop, finger paints, play-dough, and more! Parents – leave the mess to us. This is a great social experience for both you and your toddler. The program meets Mondays at the Old Middle School/Central Office Room A-117 from 10:00 – 10:45 am from March 23 – April 27 (No 4/13) The fee is $47 / $32 siblings. (non-residents add $10).


The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering the American Red Cross Babysitting Course this winter. Class will meet Wednesdays, March 11 – 25 from 5:45 – 7:45 pm.  Both will be held in the HKHS Lower Media Center.  The fee is $72 and includes a Red Cross Babysitting Manual and Certificate. Non-residents please add $10.

There will be  a CPR for Babysitters session on Tuesday and Thursday, Aprl 7 & 9 from 5:45 – 7:45 pm at the HKHS Lower Media Center. The fee is $46 (non-residents add $10).  Must have taken the Babysitter’s Training class in order to take the CPR section.

The course is for students ages 11 – 15, and is designed to prepare them for babysitting.

This American Red Cross Program has been updated to include Basic Child Care, First Aid for breathing and bleeding emergencies, and injury prevention as well as covering other important topics to prepare young adults for babysitting. Students will not become certified in CPR or 1st Aid, but will gain knowledge. This class is an excellent opportunity to help students build self-confidence as well as job leadership, and decision-making skills.


The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department has the Children’s Museum of SE CT coming to HK. These programs are a mix of science demonstration and hands-on activities for students in grades pre-K-  4.  The fee is $22 (non-residents add $5) each session or $15 if you are enrolled in after-school program that day. The fee is also a $17 each if you sign up for 2 or more classes.
The topics include:
Amazing Magnetics – Come explore the properties of magnets. Go magnet-fishing, create a magnetic painting, work with iron shavings and experiment with polarity. Plus the compass will be introduced and you will build one too. For school age kids, this workshop will be held on Wednesday, March 25th at HES and Thursday, March 26th at KES from 3:30 – 4:15 pm.  The Pre-school session will be held on March 25th from 1:30 – 2:15 pm at the HK Old MS/Central Office A-117.
Crazy Science (Color) – Get out the safety glasses and lab coats – it is slime time with colors! From reactions to polymers, scientific principles such as states of matter, substance density or surface equipment to investigate. Don’t miss the spectacular ending.  For school age kids, this workshop will be held on Wednesday, April 29th at HES and Thursday, April 30th at KES.  The Pre-school session will be held on April 29th from 1:30 – 2:15 pm at the HK Old MS/Central Office A-117.


The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department has use of the HK Middle School Fitness Room on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 – 7:00 pm from March 18 – May 4th (No 4/13, 4/15). The fee is $48 each session. Non-residents can register for an additional $10.

Re-shape your body and lose weight at the same time. This personalized class will emphasize safe and effective resistance training techniques to help achieve your fitness goals. A variety of cardiovascular equipment is available such as treadmills, stationary bikes and elliptical trainers. There is also weight training equipment available. All ability levels will benefit from this class and participants can workout at their own pace. Start the new year right and Get Fit!


The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a Creative Art classes this spring. Children in grades K – 4 will explore a world of creativity through a variety of different projects from woodcrafts to paper art and make fun projects. Each session will also have a day of cookie decorationg! Class will meet on Mondays from 3:30 – 4:45 pm at Killingworth Elementary School from March 9 – 30). The class will meet on Wednesdays from 3:30-4:45pm at Burr Elementary from March 11 – April 22 (No 3/18, 4/8, 4/15).  There will be class at Haddam Elementary School 3:30-4:45 pm on Tuesdays, March 10 – 31.  There will be sessions in late April as well.  The fee is $50 per each four-week session (non-residents add $10). Kids should bring a smock or shirt that can get messy.

Young Chefs of HK

The HK Recreation Department is offering some fun cooking classes this spring. Young Chefs is for boys and girls in grades 1 – 5.  It meets from 4:15 – 5:45 pm at the HKHS B-112. The fee is $26  each class (non-residents add $10).  It is a unique culinary experience which will offer cooking classes to children in a safe environment that will encourage discovery and creativity. Each visit will be a new experience with fresh monthly themes and exciting new programs. Students sharpen their skills by employing the mantra, “Mise en Place” which, in the cooking world, translates into “Everything in its place.” Young chefs will learn basics in kitchen safety, proper food handling, food preparation, cooking and baking techniques, presentation, and so much more! At the end of each workshop the young chef will leave with a packet of info on how to recreate what we made in class and tasty treats for their family to try.

  • April 1 – Blueberry muffins!
  • May 6 – Homeade fudge!
  • June 3 – homeade baked chicken nuggets and yummy fruit smoothies.

HIP HOP Dance workshop

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a Hip Hop Dance Party Workshop class this spring for students in grades K – 5.  Participants can sign up for Tuesday, March 17th at Haddam  Elementary Scool.  It will be held from 3:30 – 4:30 pm. The fee is $22 or $15 if enrolled in our After-School program the same day. Non-residents please add $5.  Kids will have a blast and learn some cool Hip Hop Dance moves. There will be fun DJ lights and an instructional enteraining presentation by Austin.


The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a Magic Workshops for boys and girls ages 5 – 12 on Wednesday, March 11th at Killingworth Elementary School from 3:30 – 4:30 PM. The fee is $22 each. Non-Residents please add $5. Children will have fun learning basic introductory magic while building self-confidence and dexterity. Five different tricks will be taught in each session. Each child will receive a magic kit which includes 5 tricks, an instruction sheet describing each trick, and a magic wand. Kids will also be entertained by Tom O’Brien’s own act. Tom is a master at his craft and is a wonderful and entertaining teacher as well.  New tricks this session!


The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department is offering a Fairy Garden Workshop on Saturday, March 14th at 11 am at Town and Country Nurseries. The fee is $45 (non-residents add $5). Create your very own fairy garden.  Each participant will go home with a completed fairy garden which includes container, plants, soil and fairy garden accessories.  Great for all ages!

CROSSROADS Driving School

The Haddam-Killingworth Recreation is offering a Driver’s Ed program this winter. Participants must be 16 years old before the start of class. Option 1 is a Full Program that includes 30 hours of classroom as well as the safe driving and alcohol program along with 8 hours of behind-the-wheel. The fee is $500 (non-residents add $10). Option 2 is a Classroom only option, where participants can take the 30 hours of class, but no driving. Includes the Safe Driving portion. The fee is $265 (non-residents add $10). Option 3 is the Safe Driving and Drug and Alcohol Program, which is the 8 hour course that fulfills the requirement of the State of CT for license applicants who took a Home Training Program. This course is required for all drivers, including those who are over the age of 18. The fee for this course is $150.

Classes will be held at the HKHS room C-111.  The classroom dates will be held on  Tuesdays & Thursdays   Monday 4/6: 2:50-4:50 OR Tuesday 4/7: 6-8:00;  4/9, 4/21, Monday 4/27 : 2:50-4:50 OR Tuesday 4/28: 6-8:00.,  4/30, Monday 5/4: 2:50-4:50  OR Tuesday 5/5: 6:00-8:00, 5/7, 5/12, 5/14, Monday 5/18 2:50-4:50 OR 5/19 6-8:00; 5/21, 5/26, 5/28  (plus 4/2 – Parent/Student Class, 6:00 pm). Make-ups: 5/13 or 5/20.

There will be a Safe Driving Program (the first 4 classes including the parent/student orientation on April 2nd  from 6:00 – 8:00 pm). The Parent/Student Orientation is mandatory for both student and parent to attend in the HKHS Seminar Room.
