Submitted by Sue Twachtman, Chairman, RSD #17 Board of Education.

Members of the Region 17 Board of Education will be getting the Superintendent’s Proposed 2015-2016 School Budget shortly and will spend the following weeks working many long hours to fully examine it and make further cuts and modifications.

The Budget Process actually began October 1st, 2014.  This is the annual kick off meeting between the Superintendent of Schools and the school administration.   Between then and December 3rd, the administrators submit their operational and capital budgets to the Director of Fiscal Operations.  In the weeks and months following, the Superintendent meets often with members of the administration in a series of budget meetings.   This includes the Director of Facilities regarding buildings and grounds, the High School Principal, the Middle School Principal, the three Elementary School Principals, the Director of Pupil Services regarding special education, the Food Services Director and the Director of Technology, and other staff members.   The administrators work to make further cuts and adjustments to the budget.

On March 3rd, 2015, the Superintendent of Schools will present his recommended budget for the 2015-2016 school year to members of the Board of Education at the HKHS Community Room at 6:30 pm.  Board members will subsequently conduct a series of workshops to analyze, understand and consider budgetary items.  There will inevitably be further cuts and changes to the Superintendent’s recommended budget in the weeks to follow.

On March 12th a Joint Meeting with the Selectwomen and Boards of Finance from Haddam and Killingworth will be held at the HKMS Student Commons at 7 pm.

On March 17th there will be a Community Input Meeting at 6:30 pm in the Central Office gym.  This is specifically for members of the public to voice opinions regarding the school budget.  Please come and share your ideas with us!

On April 7th there will be an Annual Hearing and Special Meeting of the Board of Education.  This meeting is for final review, modifications and the adoption of the 2015-2016 School Budget.  It will be held in the HKMS Student Commons at 7 pm.

The Annual Meeting on the 2015-2016 school budget will be held at 7 pm in the HKHS auditorium.   The referendum will be held on May 5 in each respective town on the Board of Education’s 2015-2016 School Budget.

The Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools encourages members of the community to get involved with the process, voice concerns, makes suggestions, and seek answers to questions.  And don’t forget to exercise your right to vote on May 5th!

Sue, thank you very much for writing the article and and to the entire Board of Education for working so hard on the budget this year. You and the Board have done a great job at controlling costs and efficiently spending our money in the best interest of our students. We realize that the Board is required to cover increases in the cost of salaries, benefits and government mandated educational requirements.
