Written by Kathy Brown.

The Haddam Killingworth High School Holiday Show was started in 1988. For the last 16 years, Chuck Lewis of the HKHS Communications Department, has been leading it.  To date, under Mr. Lewis’ leadership, they have raised just under $500,000 for various charities/organizations. “It’s not just about

raising money,” says Mr. Lewis, “[We’re also] using our visual medium [to] raise awareness about the cause — which you can’t put a dollar amount on.” In the last five years, the Holiday Show has donated funds to Crohns Disease, Finley’s Fighters (started by Finley’s mother, former school nurse at HES), Team Avery, Shoreline Soup Kitchens, and Camp Rising Sun (a Connecticut camp for children who have been diagnosed with cancer). Mr. Lewis says, “Seeing the look on my students’ faces at the end of every show — with a sense of pride and accomplishment that they’ve helped others!!

This year, the Holiday Show will benefit Amanda Lisitano, an HKHS Graduate from the class of 1997 recently diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer (see “A Tough Road Made Easier with Friends” here). The Holiday Show’s mission is to help her family with medical expenses not covered by insurance, and also ease the burden of mortgage payments and other staple necessities.

This 3 1/2 hour show is put on by the students. The students take on many different roles: media relations, web designer, Pledge accountant, Can Drive coordinators, Senior Producers, telephone director, Green Room organizers, Live Show directors, Set Design, Decorations, On Camera Talent (auditions are held), and the studio crew which consists of camera, floor director, sound studio, teleprompter, and more. There are always a variety of performances during the show. This year, Regional School District 17 students from elementary schools to high school will perform. Mr. Lewis said, “This program offers my students a real world authentic opportunity.”
