HK Youth Football Week 8 2014

Submitted by Eric Anderson.

On October 26th, Haddam Killingworth Youth Football and Cheerleading hosted the Panthers of South Windsor for the final games of the regular season.

In a hard fought and competitive A team game, the Cougars would take a slim 14-13 advantage late into the second half which led to an exciting final quarter of action. An incomplete pass by HK on 4th down handed control of the ball to the South Windsor offense at midfield with 4:37 left in the game. Using a strong run game, the Panthers would score a touchdown but the HK defense would deny the Panthers the extra point conversion and the visiting team settled for a 19-14 lead with only 1:15 remaining in the game. High drama ensued as quarterback James Murphy found an open Zach Kauffman over the middle for the completion. Kauffman would break a pair of tackles and run in for the score to give HK a 20-19 advantage with under 25 seconds remaining in the game. South Windsor, needing a last second score for the win, would return the kickoff for the 25-20 victory. The team finishes the regular season with a 1-6 record.

CTYFL Playoff: The A team travels to Rocky Hill on Sunday, November 2nd for a rematch against South Windsor under the lights in the Rose Bowl at 4pm.

Dalton Brown scored a touchdown in the first half of the B team game and the HK defense, led by the inspired play of Dalton Modehn, John Bruder and Ryder Wink, would keep the South Windsor offense at bay, allowing only a single touchdown through three quarters of play. On the offensive side of the ball, Dylan Kasperzyk had two kickoff returns of over 60 yards each to put the HK offense in scoring position. With the game tied 6-6 at the end of three quarters, the Panther offense would score three unanswered touchdowns lifting them to a 25-6 victory. The B team finishes the regular season with a 0-8 record. Four of the B team losses where by an average of only 6 points. The balance of the losses were to teams with a combined league record of 24-6 and from towns with significantly greater populations than Haddam and Killingworth.

CTYFL Playoff: The B team travels to Berlin on Sunday, November 2nd to take on the Canton Warriors in the Orange Bowl at 11:30am. Canton beat HK in week three of the regular season by a score of 21-13.

Ethan Coady of the C team made a touchdown saving tackle on the Cougar 5 yard line but a Vincent Scileppi sack and Nick Fox interception would help thwart the first South Windsor scoring opportunity of the day. Cam Hines would add a touchdown in the first quarter of play for the Cougars and the host team settled for a 6-0 halftime lead. Hines and Tate Callender would each score a touchdown in the second half, with Callender’s 65 yard scamper aided by a monster block from HK’s Julian Stanford. The HK defense would hold the Panther offense scoreless in the game to preserve the 20-0 shutout victory. The defense was sparked in part by the fine play of Cavin Napoletano, Vincent Sclieppi, Tyler Gras, Kevin Gamache, Justice Mangiagli, Alex Phipps and Zach Johnson. Quarterback Bryce Anderson (73 yds), Hines (76 yds), Callender (96 yds) and Mangiagli (15 yds) anchored an effective running game on the day for the Cougars. With the win the team finishes the regular season with a 3-4-1 record.
